If you get the chance to go fruit picking then this is a great recipe to make with some of those berries you have. If you are lucky enough to enjoy growing your own fruit then why not pick extra and make something a little different.
Fruit roll ups are a great healthy snack on the go for kids and frugal too.
This recipe can be used with apples, pears, blackberries, blueberries, cherry, mango, raspberries and more.
It’s so easy to do and kids love them. It’s also a great recipe if you find you have some leftover fruit that needs using up.
These never last long in our house.
Sometimes I sieve the strawberry seeds out of the strawberry fruit roll ups and I would highly recommend sieving the raspberry seeds out but sometimes I’m a little lazy and leave the strawberry seeds in this recipe. I’m human after all! Or if you prefer a little texture in the leather roll ups then leave the seeds in.
Silicone baking mats work the best for the fruit rolls not to stick on them. Avoid using foil or parchment paper as the fruit will just stick to it.
Fruit! A single fruit or a combination. The choice is yours.
If you’re using a light coloured fruit then add a teaspoon or two of lemon juice to avoid strong discolouration.
Strawberries, raspberries, mangoes, peach, apricots, blueberries, blackberries, bananas, apples, pears etc.
Measuring is not too important. Aim to make it worthwhile washing up, 3 cups of fruit or more.
If required add honey, algar or sugar to sweeten.
Wash the fruit.
Peel fruit if necessary.
Blend to a puree. If you don’t want seeds then sieve the puree.
Add sweeter if needed although fruits are naturally sweet. Honey is a good natural sweetener.
Spread onto the baking sheet with a spatula. The puree should be thin enough to pour but thick enough to stay put on the sheet.
Aim for 1/8″ thickness.
Bake in the oven checking regularly as the aim is to dry the fruit as opposed to cooking it. This can take between 6-8 hours. Use the lowest temperature setting on your oven and keep checking it’s progress regularly. It does take time to dry it out but is so worth it.
